Join "Be The Match" to help Del Norte High student
fight blood cancer
High school senior, Manai Hazlett, is a running back for the Del Norte High School football team and one of the top running backs in San Diego. On April 5, 2019, Manai was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. After over a year of chemotherapy and treatment he began the journey of physical therapy and rehab to get back on the field. However, on April 6, 2021 Manai received the diagnosis that he had a relapse of the same cancer. He is currently undergoing treatment which includes chemotherapy and a very important bone marrow transplant.
Manai’s bone marrow transplant is crucial because his body needs strong and healthy cells in order to prevent another relapse of the cancer. The transplant will involve a compatible donor providing healthy bone marrow for Manai so that his body can multiply the healthy cells and fight off the cancerous ones. However, Manai cannot receive the transplant until a matching donor is located. Be The Match is the National Bone Marrow Registry, and their goal is to create a large and diverse registry of dedicated donors who may be a match for patients like Manai who need a bone marrow transplant.
Every year, more than 14,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancer like lymphoma for which a marrow transplant from a donor may be their best or only hope of a cure. 70% of all patients who need a transplant do not have a matched donor in their family. They depend on the Be The Match registry to find an unrelated donor.
Joining the registry is very easy. Registering involves filling out some personal information and a brief medical history. If you qualify to join the registry, you will do a simple cheek swab test to collect DNA. Be The Match will analyze your DNA and then add you to the registry so you are now an option for a patient searching for a match.
As members of the registry, people are never under any legal obligation to donate if asked, but Be The Match encourages everyone to think seriously about their commitment before deciding to join the registry.
Help us spread the word about Manai’s search for a donor and raise awareness about the Be The Match Registry. If you are interested in joining the National Registry there are many opportunities:
